The Secondhand Table
I cannot believe that Thanksgiving is just around the corner! It has always been a favorite family holiday, so we do not like to skip over it and jump to Christmas too fast!
This year I was inspired to set my Thanksgiving table with all secondhand treasures and pieces I already own - no buying new stuff that I do not need! It was a fun challenge thrown my way by my friend Rachel over at Cherry Street Blossoms, and I jumped at the chance to participate.
You already know that I love secondhand pieces for their vintage charm, but I also love that by decorating with secondhand pieces I make a conscious effort to be more earth-friendly. Buying new items all of the time creates unnecessary waste - think about all of that packaging stuff comes in, the fuel that gets burned to deliver such items… when you really think about it the carbon footprint behind home decor is huge.
So, let me inspire you to take a look at what you already own and reuse or repurpose it and let me inspire you to shop your local thrift stores, flea markets, and my fav - Facebook Marketplace for beautiful items to set your table with…
The elements:
Pumpkins - Pumpkins are a great way of bringing color and scale to your table! They give a harvest feel and because they are available in so many colors you have so many table scape color options. The blue-ish (jarrahdale) and white pumpkins just look so pretty on my table. Also, they are 100% biodegradable!
Foraged Flora - Even if the frost hit where you live, there are so many great twigs, dried flowers, branches and berries to pick from right outside. Again, 100% biodegradable. I assembled a simple bouquet for my table and added a few sprigs to each place setting.
Buy the Basics - All of my tableware is super basic - white dishes, clear glasses, etc. The simplicity of them allows me to layer on different colors and textures from season to season.
Thrifted Plates - I snagged some super cheap salad plates at Goodwill. I love the soft green and how it pairs with the jarrahdale pumpkins.
Dishes for Display - We serve most of our meal buffet style, but that does not mean that some of my beautiful serving pieces can’t be added to the table for decor. My recent ironstone scores look beautiful while highlighting pumpkins
Silverware Score- This Laguoile set that I scored off of Marketplace may be my best score yet. The set retails for over $200 and I grabbed it for $25!! I love that it’s slightly fancy yet still simple.
Repurposed Napkins - I wanted to repurpose something around my house for napkins, so I looked in my linen closet and pulled down a muslin swaddle blanket that I wrapped by girls in when they were babies. The fabric is so soft and in beautiful condition, so I knew that it would make great napkins. I simply tore it into 6 segments and that’s it! I love the texture on the table!
Pressed Flowers & Leaves - my girls and I love to press flowers and leaves, so much that we often have more than we know what to do with. A couple of pressed leaves make the perfect place card with just a little paint pen writing.
I hope this inspires you to look at what you already own, what’s around you, and what can be found secondhand for your Thanksgiving and holiday tables!
