The Sister Suite, part one.

Last August I stumbled upon a pair of antique twin beds on Facebook Marketplace, and I had to have them. I had toyed with the idea of putting the girls in a shared room for some time, and these beds were the deal maker. The inlayed floral design sparked so many ideas in me, the strongest of which was using floral wallpaper.

Finding the perfect wallpaper was the challenge. Emme wanted something with blue or green, Cece wanted pink, I wanted something that felt timeless yet youthful enough for the girls. The best resource for my wallpaper search was Wallpaper Direct. Wallpaper Direct’s website is so user friendly and their search filters make it so incredibly easy to narrow down their thousands of wallpaper options. I was also able to order physical swatches of every wallpaper contender from their site, and they were all delivered very quickly.

Once the swatch arrived for the William Morris Compton print in Summer Yellow, I knew it was the one! I didn’t even have to convince the girls. They knew too. The colors were perfect; green for Emme, pink for Cece, and just the right amount of orange to tie in with the beds (for mommy). Colors aside, the pattern could not be more perfect - the floral and leaf motifs in the wallpaper are nearly identical to the design in the bed inlay.

Another quality that lead me to choosing this wallpaper was the thickness of the paper. If you have ever hung wallpaper before, you may know that the thicker the paper, the easier it is to hang. Thicker paper like this one is much better for beginners than a thinner paper (or even peel and stick in my opinion) because its thickness makes it easier to position (and reposition if necessary). Thinner paper tends to stretch for me, making it more difficult to line up the pattern.

The paint color I chose for the trim and wainscoting is Artichoke Hearts by Benjamin Moore (slightly altered to be more green). It’s a great color that gives the room a youthful feel. The finish is a semi-gloss, so it will resist the abuse that comes along with a kids room.

The ceiling was planked using shiplap paneling and painted a Mellowed Ivory by Benjamin Moore in a satin finish.

Stay tuned for part two of the Sister Suite!
