One Room Challenge: Fall 2019 / Week 2

October is a busy month for many of us, and getting this ORC done on time is going to be a stretch! Between soccer practice, work, school activities, play dates, and just trying to be a good wife and a mom I managed to get the top half of the room completely painted and get the headboard of my bed completely stripped.

A few months back, I found an amazing spindle bed on Facebook Marketplace for $25 - the only problem was that it was 4 hours from my house in Maryland. Fortunately, my newly retired Dad volunteered to drive to get the bed because it was only an hour and a half from him! Thanks Dad!

The bed was so beautiful already, but the finish felt totally 80’s and way too orange for my liking, so I stripped it down to the bare wood using an eco-friendly stripping paste, a wire brush, and sandpaper. The process has been pretty intense, but I am loving the results! I do this that a stronger stripping agent with more intense chemicals would have worked faster, but I don’t want to expose myself to all of those harsh chemicals.

The new finish that I am applying to the bed is a combo of Annie Sloan Dark Wax and clear wax, and it’s looking great already! The smoother areas are getting the dark wax, and the rougher, more porous areas are getting clear wax. I never used furniture wax before and I am very happy with the soft color and low luster finish it gives. It’s very easy to apply too!

That’s all for now - hopefully I have more to report on painting next week!

Thanks for reading,

Dana
